For most El Paso homes, refrigerated air is the better system — and the reason has almost nothing to do with which one is “nicer.” It comes down to one fact about our weather: a swamp cooler only works when the air is dry, and El Paso’s air is not dry from July through September. Why humidity is the dividing line
A swamp cooler is not an air conditioner. It pulls outside air through wet pads, water evaporates, and the evaporation absorbs heat — so the air that reaches your rooms is cooler than the air outside. The U.S. Department of Energy lists evaporative coolers among the alternatives to air conditioning that use less energy, and in genuinely dry desert air they earn that reputation.
The catch is that evaporation needs dry air to work. When outdoor humidity rises, less water evaporates, less heat is absorbed, and the cooler simply stops delivering cold air. It does not break. It does not throw a code. It keeps running and blowing, and the house keeps getting warmer.
Refrigerated air works on a completely different principle. It uses refrigerant to pull heat out of the air inside your home and dump it outside, in a closed loop that never touches outdoor humidity. That is why a properly sized refrigerated system holds your temperature on a 105-degree August afternoon while the neighbor’s cooler is losing ground.
The monsoon problem, in plain terms
Every El Paso family who has lived with a swamp cooler knows the pattern. In May the cooler feels great. By mid-July the house sits at 84 degrees no matter how long the cooler runs, the air feels heavy and sticky, and doors start swelling in their frames. That is not a broken unit — it is the monsoon doing exactly what monsoons do to evaporative cooling.
It is worse in some parts of the region than others. Homes closer to the Rio Grande and in the irrigated Upper Valley — Canutillo, Vinton, the West Valley — sit in noticeably more humid air during summer irrigation season, so the cooler fails earlier and harder there than it does on the dry mesa.
Water: the cost that shows up on a different bill
Swamp coolers run water continuously to keep the pads saturated, and in a desert city that is not a small line item. The EPA notes that outdoor water use averages more than 30 percent of household water use nationally, but can reach as much as 60 percent in arid regions — water is simply a bigger share of the bill here than almost anywhere else in the country.
This is where the “swamp coolers are cheaper to run” argument usually falls apart. The electricity comparison is real: a cooler uses far less power than a central system. But when you add summer water consumption and the yearly pad, pump, and belt service that keeps a cooler alive, the gap narrows considerably. Compare total cost of ownership, not just the electric bill.
Maintenance: a season-opening ritual versus a filter
A swamp cooler needs hands-on work twice a year. In spring, someone gets on the roof to replace the pads, check the float and pump, tighten or replace the belt, and turn the water line on. In fall, the same trip happens in reverse to drain and winterize it so the lines do not freeze and split. Skip a season and you get rust, mineral scale from El Paso’s hard water, and a unit that smells musty when it starts up.
Refrigerated air asks for less: change the filter on schedule, and get one professional maintenance visit a year before summer. Comfort, dust, and indoor air
A swamp cooler requires windows or vents cracked open so air can escape; without that outlet, the system cannot move air through the house. That means your home is never really sealed. Desert dust, pollen, and outdoor air come in all summer along with the moisture. In a dust-heavy city, that is a real quality-of-life difference.
Refrigerated air runs in a closed house. Air is recirculated and filtered instead of pulled in raw from outside, which is why families dealing with allergies or heavy dust usually notice the change within days. Home value and resale
El Paso buyers have shifted. Refrigerated air is now what most people expect to find, and a home still on evaporative cooling frequently becomes a negotiation point — the buyer assumes the conversion cost lands on them and prices the offer accordingly. Converting removes that objection and widens the pool of people willing to make an offer at all. It is not the main reason most families convert, but it is a real part of the math.
When a swamp cooler still makes sense
Honesty matters more than a sale. A swamp cooler can still be the right call for a detached shop or garage, a seasonal or rarely occupied property, a small structure where the up-front cost of refrigerated air is hard to justify, or a home where someone is genuinely happy with the tradeoff and only needs dry-season cooling. If that describes your situation, keeping and maintaining the cooler is a reasonable decision.
For a full-time family home that has to be livable in August, though, the tradeoff stops working — and that is why conversion has become one of the biggest home-improvement trends across the region.
What the switch actually involves
A conversion is more than swapping a box. The system is sized to your square footage, layout, and insulation; the ductwork is evaluated and either reused, modified, or fabricated new; and the electrical panel may need an upgrade from 100 to 200 amps to carry the new load. Ductwork is where the difference in quality usually shows up. Swamp cooler ducts were built to move large volumes of low-pressure air and are not always sized or sealed for refrigerated air, and in older homes the sheet metal is often rusted through. Most companies subcontract that work. We fabricate our own ductwork in-house, which means the duct is built to the correct specification for your system rather than ordered from an outside shop and hoped to fit.
