Start with the thermostat — the free fix

Check the fan setting before anything else. Set to ON, the blower runs continuously, including the minutes between heating cycles when the burners are off. The vents deliver room-temperature air, which reads as “cold” on a winter evening. Set the fan to AUTO and the blower only runs while the heater is producing heat. This one setting accounts for a surprising share of “my heater is broken” calls, and it costs nothing to rule out.

While you are there, confirm the thermostat is on HEAT and set a few degrees above the room. If the display is blank, try fresh batteries — a dead thermostat and a dead heater look identical from the couch.

The furnace and the air conditioner share the same blower and the same filter. By the time heating season starts, that filter has eaten a full summer of fine Chihuahuan Desert dust — more in the valley and edge-of-town areas where field dust piles on. A choked filter strangles airflow, the furnace overheats, and a safety device called the high-limit switch shuts the burners down while the blower keeps running. Result: cold air from every vent.

The same idle-season dust also lands on the flame sensor, a small rod that confirms the burners actually lit. A dust-filmed sensor cannot see the flame, so it shuts the gas off seconds after ignition — the furnace clicks, whooshes briefly, and goes cold again. When the heater is fine and the ducts are the problem

If the air is hot at the unit but lukewarm or cold by the time it reaches the far bedrooms, the equipment is doing its job and the duct system is losing the heat.
