You hear the outdoor unit kick on, it runs for three or four minutes, and it shuts off. A few minutes later, it does it again. And again. The house never really gets comfortable, the electric bill goes up anyway, and you have the nagging sense the system is fighting something.
That pattern has a name — short cycling — and it matters more than most homeowners realize. It’s not just annoying. It’s the single most reliable way to destroy a compressor.
What short cycling actually is
A healthy air conditioner runs in long cycles. In El Paso summer heat, a properly sized system usually runs 15 to 20 minutes or more at a time, and on a 105-degree afternoon it may run nearly nonstop. That’s not a malfunction — that’s what a correctly sized system looks like when the outdoor temperature is at design conditions.
Short cycling is when the system runs less than about 10 minutes per cycle and restarts several times an hour. The compressor never reaches its efficient running state, the indoor coil never gets long enough to pull humidity out of the air, and every restart hits the motor with a large inrush of current.

The causes, in the order we usually find them
A clogged air filter
This is first for a reason: it’s the most common cause and the only one that’s free. A dirty filter chokes airflow across the evaporator coil. Without enough warm air moving across it, the coil can’t absorb heat, refrigerant pressures drift out of range, and the system’s safety controls shut it down. Once things settle, it restarts — and trips again a few minutes later.

A frozen evaporator coil
Low airflow or low refrigerant lets the indoor coil drop below freezing, and condensation turns to ice. As the ice grows, the system loses capacity, pressures go further out of range, and it trips off. It thaws slightly, restarts, and repeats — classic short cycling with a very visible symptom.
If you see frost or ice on the copper lines or the indoor unit, turn the system off and let it thaw completely before running it again. A thermostat that’s reading the wrong room
This one surprises people. The thermostat only knows the temperature at the wall it’s mounted on. Put it in direct afternoon sun, above a lamp or a television, on a wall shared with the kitchen, or directly in the stream of a supply vent, and it will read a temperature nothing else in the house is experiencing.
If it’s reading warm because of sunlight, the system runs when it shouldn’t. If it’s reading cool because a vent is blowing on it, it satisfies in three minutes and shuts the whole system down while the bedrooms are still hot. Either way you get short cycles. Relocating a thermostat to an interior wall away from heat sources and airflow sometimes solves the entire problem.
Low refrigerant from a leak
Refrigerant is not consumed — it circulates in a sealed loop. If the charge is low, there is a leak. A low charge causes low suction pressure, which trips the low-pressure safety switch, which shuts the system down. Pressure equalizes, the switch resets, the system restarts, and it trips again. Short cycling with gradually worsening cooling over a couple of seasons is a leak until proven otherwise.
This is not a DIY item. Refrigerant handling requires EPA Section 608 certification, and “just adding a can” without repairing the leak means paying for refrigerant twice and leaving the compressor running starved in the meantime.
Electrical faults: capacitor, contactor, safeties
The capacitor gives the compressor and fan motors the jolt they need to start. A weakening capacitor makes the compressor strain, draw high current, overheat, and trip its internal overload — off in a minute, back on when it cools, off again. A pitted or sticking contactor does something similar from the other direction, chattering the compressor on and off.

A system that’s simply too big
If everything checks out mechanically and the system has short cycled since the day it was installed, the likely answer is that it was oversized. It’s a common outcome when a system gets replaced by matching a nameplate, or when a swamp cooler is converted to refrigerated air without a proper load calculation.
An oversized unit cools the air to the setpoint in a few minutes and shuts off — before it has run long enough to remove humidity, before the cold air has evened out room to room. The house feels cold and clammy near the thermostat and hot at the far end of the hall, and the compressor starts and stops all day. Bigger is not better; correctly sized is better. Why this is worth fixing now
Starting a compressor draws several times the current that running it does. Every restart heats the motor windings, stresses the internal valves, and can pull liquid refrigerant where only vapor belongs. Oil doesn’t circulate properly through cycles that never reach steady state, so internal parts run drier than designed.
The result is that a compressor rated for well over a decade of service can fail in a few seasons of short cycling. And the compressor is the most expensive single component in the system — on an older unit, replacing it often costs enough that replacing the system makes more sense.
Short cycling also costs you comfort and money the whole time it’s happening: higher bills from constant restarts, worse humidity control, and rooms that never even out.
What to do
Change the filter and watch one full cycle. Make sure supply vents and returns are open and unobstructed. Look at where the thermostat is mounted and what’s near it. Check whether the outdoor unit is buried in dust or debris and give it two feet of clearance.
If it’s still cycling short after that — and especially if you see ice, hear the outdoor unit straining to start, or the cooling has been fading season over season — shut it off and call. Running it in that condition is spending compressor life you can’t buy back. A seasonal maintenance visit catches most of these before they start.
